Theres whispers of collaborations, start-ups, pop-ups, get-ups, creative projects, art collectives, urban gardens, vacant space takeovers, guerilla art, creative enterprise, food revolution, community regeneration....it's all looming in the air.

We're glad to be a part of promoting second hand market culture in the city and hope you are still enjoying that one day a month that we can offer down in Newmarket.

All Aboard The Christmas Markets

After Our 3rd Birthday last month we're finishing off the year with two Christmas Markets.

The first one is the 'Christmas Cracker' over in Smithfield on December 10th & 11th. Its going to be taking place over two locations in Block T and Block B. You can find a map here: http://g.co/maps/p5eej

The only time we've ever moved from our home in Newmarket square was last year to collaborate with those great folks over at Block T. We had a great weekend so inevitably decided to do it again this year, but do it bigger and better. So not only are we going to be in the wonderful space that is Block T but we are taking over Block B as well, just accross the cobbles from Block T. Block B is just one of so many empty buildings in the Smithfield area so we are delighted to bring some life into it for the first time, even if it is only for two days.

Block T will play host to the 'Affordable Art', a brief round up of some of the amazing talent that Dublin's artist scene has to offer and all at very accessible prices. And Block B will be rammed with the rest - clothes, bric-a-brac, furniture, music, bikes, stocking fillers, wooly jumpers, theres some seriously great traders coming down. You'll even be able to pick up your christmas tree if you havnt already done so. Dublin has so much to offer at the moment in the way of small independent businesses and individuals doing amazing things and we're really proud to be able to give them a platform to trade from. Buy local this christmas!! Its worth it.

Both Block T and Block B will have food and music throughout the day with the delicious flea falafel stall and amazing grub from two Dublin foodie newcomers - The Pie Man Cafe in Temple Bar and Seven Social in Smithfield. Tea, Coffee and mulled wine for the addicts among you as well.

We will also be collecting for St Vincent dePaul who do stunning work over christmas time, and throughout the year. There will be a christmas tree in Block B that we would encourage you all to leave a little something underneath. A little goes a long way, as we all know.

The Christmas Cracker

Having danced into the wee hours of the morning in a friends house I asked one of my fellow stragglers to the party, Adrien Merigeau if he would be interested in doing a poster for the Block T Christmas Market in Smithfield. Thank God he said yes because he produced one of the nicest christmas posters to date. When we posted it up there was a facebook comment along the lines of "Wow! Christmas advertising that actually makes me feel all warm inside!"

The market is shaping up to be an absolute cracker (pun intended). Theres a lot of talk at the moment about shopping local this christmas and it makes so much sense. There are some truly amazing artists, crafters, small businesses and individuals doing great things in Dublin at the moment and we're really proud to have over 100 of them at the market. We're spoilt for choice!

Oh yeah and we're having a party on the saturday night, because we'd love to have a drink with you all. Its going to take place in Generator Hostel on Smithfield square on Saturday 10th. Generator have a great space, and a bar thats open til 2.30. DJs and bands to be announced in the next couple of days.

Christmas Markets

This year we're going to be doing two Christmas Markets - Our usual Christmas Market in Newmarket on December 18th and the Block T and Dublin Flea Christmas Cracker is back again in Smithfield on December 10th and 11th.

The Smithfield market is going to be Dublin's biggest christmas market with 120 stalls, food, music, coffee, christmas trees and the introduction of a whole new space.... BLOCK B. This will be the first time that Block B is being used as it is another one of those monstrous disused spaces over in Smithfield. Should be an amazing weekend...cant wait.

We'll be back in Newmarket then the week after for the annual Flea before Christmas in the Co-op, all the usual loveliness in tow.....maybe some added roasted chestnuts on an open fire.

We're throwin a street party at the flea this Sunday!!

Streetfeast which is a great, great initiative happens to fall on the same day as the market this month so we're going to set up a big long table in the centre of the outside area and all we need is for you to bring down some grub and get stuck in. So many of you come down to the market every month and this time we want you just to stay a little bit longer and enjoy a Sunday lunch together.

It will be a rolling feast all day and everyone is welcome to join. The idea though is that everyone chips in and brings something to the table, even if its small, just to contribute to the event - it can be a dish, a salad, a cake, some biscuits, bread, dips, drinks, party hats or even just some flowers for the table.

And all the usual market banter going on around you. Cant wait!

The hare with one ear for sale came about by thinking of the type of object that can turn up at a flea market ie. stuffed fox, old shoe, antique light bulb, original Albrecht Drurer drawing and so on, you really don't know what you're in for. There was an episode of The Simpsons where Homer picks up a violin in a flea market and reads the label on it "stradi-who-vious?" before flinging it into the rest of the pile, not realising he was holding a priceless stradivarious fiddle. The hilarity of it all is too much to fathom so I decided to turn Albrecht Drurer's famous drawing of a hare into a marketable object, the type that would look good on the shelf at home! I've seen the same hare for sale in an art gallery in Germany cast in a chocolate mould so someone's got there before me.

We've all been up to ninety getting ready for and working at Body and Soul last weekend - what a festival! Great craic. Great craic. Great craic.

But the end of the month roles around once again and the brain tunes into Flea mode.

The Summer markets are great now with the outside stalls, its lovely to just sit amongst the hustle and bustle and soak it all up.

This month's quirky poster was designed by Stephen Rothschild. Stephen is established Irish Artist who has had a number solo and group shows exhibitions here and abroad. He is also great fun fun and a regular at the Dublin Flea Market. His work which has evolved over the years from figurative to abstract painting and collage is pretty amazing!

Dublin Flea and Block T Christmas Cracker

We've joined forces with Block T in Smithfield to offer Dublin the best Christmas shopping experience since 1853.

Block T have an amazing space on the south end of Smithfield square where they have been housing artists/ putting on exhibitions/ offering creative space for the past 6 months. There are 4 rooms over two floors which we will be filling with all the best Dublin Flea Market stalls for a full weekend of festive haggling and bargains on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th December.

There will be 50+ stalls as well as a chill out area, plenty of music and food and more Christmas cheer than Mr. Claus himself. This will be the most unique Christmas market Dublin has seen in the last while...and there wont be a German wooden hut in sight! Just the best second hand, vintage and retro wares you can find in Ireland with a healthy amount of local artists, designers and crafters selling their wares.

In case any of you were wondering about the wooden frame canopies from Germany....and that the new canopies look a lot like steel frame ones from England.....you are right. In the end we couldnt go with the beautiful German ones (BOOOO!). They were just that little bit too expensive and after a trial run they just wern't practical enough. We have to do most of the setting up of stalls in the morning ourselves and until we're multi millionaires and can afford to pay someone else to do it the good 'ol pop-up-steel-fram-ers will be just grand.

The major bonus with these canopies is their versatility - and therefore rentability.

We finally got our canopies for the outdoor stalls. woohoo!!!
Since we started the outdoor pitches we've been renting canopies every month off Dublin City Council - bit of a hassle and they couldnt guarantee us availability every month so we had to invest in our own. Its been a long time negotiating with the bank, wondering whether it was the right thing to do, wondering whether we could afford it....but we did it. Now just 3 years of repayments to look forward to (yessss!!)

So thanks to anyone who bought a raffle ticket over the last few months to help us out. Any donations or help are still greatly appreciated so slip a euro or two on the sly into the donations bin if ever you come down to the market and like what you see.

We are joining forces with SoGo – Dublin Arts Festival next weekend to bring you a once off POP UP FLEA MARKET in the centre of Dublin. Its gonna take place just a stones throw from Grafton st in the open air car park on Andrews lane. There will be 30 traders selling from their cars, food stalls, a kids area run by the SCOOP Foundation (www.thescoopfoundation.com) live grafitti artists and a performance area for buskers.

So get yourself down to do some alternative shopping in the city centre next Sunday May 2nd 12 – 5pm

ROLLOVER RAFFLE

Thanks to everyone for coming down to the flea yesterday and thanks in particular to anyone who bought a raffle ticket or made a donation to the funding of the new wooden frame canopies that we are hoping to buy from Germany. At the moment we have to rent the blue and white gazebos from Dublin City Council, who cannot guarantee their availability for every flea market day. We are one of the only markets in ireland to provide its traders with everything they need to trade - canopies, tables, chairs etc. By doing this the market is accessable to everyone, not just professional traders. So buying these canopies ourselves is something we really want to do and is absolutely necessary for the continuation of the market.

Plus, they look gorgeous!!

So if you bump into any of us around town sign yourself up for a few raffle tickets. Its a rollover for the whole summer, so as prizes are given away, more and more will be added each month. Here’s the lineup so far:

Delighted, delighted, delighted to have finally gotten the go ahead to extend the market out onto the square. We were getting that little bit cramped inside and were in need of a bit of a stretch so we added an extra 20 stalls to the existing 40 inside the warehouse. We're glad to be bringing a bit of life to a square that is so under-utilised and an area that has been screaming out for a revival.
It was an early start lashing up all the canopies, scrubbing the furniture (still dirty from last years electric picnic) but the sun we ordered was right on time and everything was peaches from there on in.

Our new website (woop woop) is just great!!! We love it and hope you do too.

Back in November we had a competition to see if someone could come up with a logo and website design for us and after a good few cups of tea, a few chocolate kimberleys and way too many meetings we decided to go with a collaboration of two of the entries.

Eimear O Connor designed the logo. She graduated from Visual Communications in NCAD in 2008, and has since worked in various graphic design companies and for Totally Dublin. She's pretty passionate about all aspects of Visual Communication, such as typography, photography and branding - check out some of the design work she has done at www.eimearoconnor.com

Jacqui Ferns came up with the design concept which we then tweaked around and took a little bit further with her help. She is a recently graduated Graphic Artist with a BA in Visual Communication. Currently based in Dublin working on freelance projects. www.jacquiferns.com

We then asked our luverly friend Davey Ahern to put it all together. God bless his cotton socks. Davey belongs to the Synth Eastwood massive. www.syntheastwood.com

A lot of the funding for the site came from the generous donations of both stall holders and the general public at the Flea Market over the last eight months so THANK YOU so much for making it happen.

James Hanley has set the bar for the posters in 2010. We are honoured that he put so much time and effort into doing a poster for us.

Heres a bit about the process:

'One regular strand of my work is a series of images of statues that I draw, paint and photograph on travels abroad. Usually classical, I then make subversive additions that gently mock the pomposity of the original poses. I combined this personal style with the required details of the Flea poster, adding an immediately recognisable symbol of Dublin in the statue of Jim Larkin, the union leader, by Oisin Kelly. This hero to the workers was the obvious choice to hold the sandwich board which details the time, date and venue and also, happily, the map which could have been tricky to incorporate into the design. Here it also echoes the ribs/veins/arteries of the figure behind. Larkin holds two baskets, (the street trader) filled with an assortment of the knick-knacks, props, toys and stuff that my house and two studios are full of (I could start my own flea market from home). Larkin is painted, the basket's still lives photographed. In the distance I've put two of my other favourite Dublin statues with appropriate speech bubbles referencing both their places in history - the uncrowned king Parnell, brought down by the church over an affair, and the great Liberator Daniel O'Connell, teasingly portrayed with a sash - and referring to the Flea itself. Angels that I photographed in Madrid recently carry aloft the banner and planes that I shot (not literally) over Lisbon fly the flag for the quirky byline.'

Hot Off The Press!! The new March poster is in!
We are all very excited, as once again it is a totally different style poster to the previous ones. They just keep on coming!

This months poster has been designed by Maja Ignaczewska. So thank you Maja for your generosity, time and design. We really love it. To view Maja's other work check out her website at www.shining-stiletto.com.

Now, you may have noticed that we are building up quite a good collection of posters, too good indeed to let them slide into the past, forgotten. So we are making them available to buy at the flea market for €5. They are printed professionally on card and the money goes directly to the artist. So if you fancy buying one or all pop down to the next Flea.. Sunday 29th March.

If you are a designer/illustrator and would like to design a poster for the Flea Market please get in touch with us at dublinflea@gmail.com. Unfortunately no money is available to us, so it requires a designer/illustrator with a big heart and some spare time. The poster does however get good coverage all over the city for three weeks before the market and will be on display and for sale at future flea markets with all proceeds going directly to you. Who knows, if people love it, you could be retiring in a couple of months time and living off the proceeds!!!

ahhh.....what a city. It seems like the world and their ubertrendy cousin are either living their or going there on a weekend sometime soon. Theres no recession jabber in the air because its like they've been living one for the last god knows how long anyway. Berlin is a testament to how life goes on and can improve in many ways when money isnt a persued pasttime.

Swop while you Shop

Oh good lord it just keeps gettin better...
There will now be a pitch solely dedicated to the swoping of items at future markets.

So what this means is that you can have a root through your wardrobes, pick out those items that you once loved but just havnt worn in the last 3 years, bring them down to us and swop them free of charge for an item at the Swop Shop Stall.

There are a few ground rules that we would like everyone to adhere to though.
Basically items that you bring should not be of bad quality, they are merely garments that you no longer wear for one reason or another. There will only be good things to swop if you bring good things to swop - so no ripped or tattered items please. And try to hold off on old penneys tank tops, think more jacket I bought last year but have only worn once!!

Each item is worth a certain amount of tokens ie. tops 1 token, jeans 2 tokens, jacket 3 tokens.....when you hand in your clothes you get their value in tokens which you then use to swop for other items. Easy

So far we have had two fantastic flea markets and two fantastic flea posters to advertise them. Keith Walsh from Turtlehead designed the posters free of charge and we have to give it to him, they really blew us away. So thank you Keith for being so generous with your time and coming up with such great designs!
As Keith can't spend all his time designing posters for us we are now looking for other great young/up coming designers that would be interested in designing posters for future flea markets. The next being on the 25th January.

The poster will get good coverage all over the city for three weeks before the market and will be on display and for sale at future flea markets with all proceeds going to the artist directly. It is a chance for you to get your work out there and contribute to the revival of the city market. If you or anybody you know is interested please contact us by email at dublinflea@gmail.com. The next flea is 25th of January so we are looking for somebody soon.

with pitches just about full for the christmas flea we need to choose carefully....
In order to keep things varied we want to have a wide (and maybe wierd) selection of everything from clothes, music, art and jewellery to random tat. But what makes these markets so special are the little gems that you know you wont be able to find anywhere else. The cooky bits n pieces of memorabilia from a decade past, those odds n ends that someone is reluctant to get rid of but just doesnt have the space anymore....

We're calling on all quirky attic hoarding potential stall holders....clear out your clutter before the new year!!!
